As of 1 January 2019, the AS/NZS 3000:2018 Wiring Rules changes are mandatory in Australia (late 2019 in New Zealand) including important updates to both residential and commercial RCD (Residual Current Device) requirements.
Domestic/Residential RCD Requirements
In new domestic/residential installations, all final subcircuits must be protected by a 30mA RCD installed at the switchboard where the final subcircuit originates, including hardwired appliances such as air conditioning, ovens and hot water systems.
In many cases, alterations and additions to existing domestic/residential installations will also require increased RCD protection. This includes switchboard replacements and any changes to an existing final subcircuit. When adding additional socket-outlets to an existing subcircuit, RCD protection must be fitted from the commencement of the additional wiring.

Commercial RCD Requirements
There are also changes to commercial RCD requirements. All final subcircuits supplying lighting and socket outlets up to and including 32A must now have 30mA RCDs installed. This was previously 20A.
All other final sub-circuits up to and including 32A and fixed wired equipment representing an increased risk of electric shock should also have 30MA RCDs installed.

For medical installations or medical equipment in the home, NHP 10mA RCDs with switched neutral in 1P width meet the required Australian Standard AS/NZS 3003 while saving half the space of a typical 10mA RCD.
For increased risk applications, such as outdoor equipment, kindergartens, or bathrooms, NHP has a 10mA range of devices for an extra level of protection.
When choosing to have upstream RCD protection it is important that special selective RCDs are used. Selective RCDs prevent the upstream RCD accidentally operating which would normally cut power to many circuits instead of the intended individual circuit. NHP also offers these selective type RCDs, Type S.
